Conference realignment has changed the look of college athletics, and perhaps no sport has been more affected than football.

If the college football schedule feels unfamiliar to fans who are still struggling to comprehend how schools on opposite coasts now play in the same conference, it might be comforting to reflect on which conference has produced the most national champions over the years.

According to ESPN, that distinction belongs to the Big Ten, which has produced 31 national champions, including the 2023-24 Michigan Wolverines.

The Southeastern Conference is the next most prolific group, with 27 national championships to its credit. Nearly half of those titles belong to the University of Alabama, which has won 13 titles, including six since 2009.
