KANSAS CITY, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- It’s been over four months since the Chiefs blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, and the team isn’t fixating on the past in order to reach the mountain top next season.

Notwithstanding the 40-22 loss in Super Bowl 59 putting NFL history on hold with the league’s first-ever three-peat, it’s still business as usual for the Chiefs as they continue working toward the 2025 season.

During mandatory minicamp last week, linebacker Nick Bolton gave a verbal glimpse into the attitude in the locker room with the loss being the most recent performance from the AFC champions. Bolton acknowledged what’s done is done and that opportunity is ahead for the Chiefs.

“Our guys are super focused. Can't really go back and change the outcome of that game, but the only thing you can do is kind of put your focus in and change the outcome for this coming season. That's what our focus is, kind of breaking down our goals all the way to the bottom,” Bolton said

The Chiefs will face another daunting start to the season, facing three playoff teams from last season in the first four weeks of the 2025 regular season, including a Super Bowl rematch against Philadelphia in Week 2.

Kansas City’s defense, led by defensive coordinator Steve Spaguolo, has established itself as one of the top units in the NFL over the last two seasons as they ranked top 10 in yards allowed per game in 2023 and 2024. Its key cogs, including Bolton, defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Trent McDuffie are each back for another run with Spagnuolo in order to make another lengthy postseason run. The Chiefs had the choice of whether they wanted to allow one of their captains in Bolton to walk in free agency, but they didn’t allow that situation to linger and locked down Bolton to a three-year extension this offseason, giving Spagnuolo a piece to his chess board he can trust.

“It’s been years and years of growing together to understand what we want to get out of this scheme. Spags does a great job of communicating. We have different guys, different personnel, we throw a lot of different bodies out there. Spags does a great job of giving confidence in his guys, giving confidence in me to make the right choice when they’re presented,” Bolton said.
