Fireworks safety is everyone’s responsibility – let’s celebrate smart this season

St. Joseph, Mo. — Each year, fireworks light up the skies as Americans come together to celebrate our nation's independence, honor milestones, and enjoy the traditions of summer. For generations, fireworks have been a cherished part of our culture. And with that long tradition comes a shared responsibility to keep our families, friends, and communities safe.
As President of the National Fireworks Association (NFA), Director of the American Pyrotechnics Safety and Education Foundation (APSEF), and Co-owner of Schneitter Fireworks, I want to encourage everyone to take a moment this season to understand how we can all enjoy fireworks safely and responsibly.
Fireworks, when used correctly and legally, create joy and lifelong memories. But when misused or handled carelessly, accidents can happen. That’s why education, preparation, and community awareness are more important than ever.
Education begins in the community
To help families and educators spread the message, we are proud to promote free, age-appropriate fireworks safety curriculum kits available at www.celebratesafely.org/curriculum-kits. These materials are perfect for schools, summer programs, and parents looking to talk about safety in a fun and engaging way.
Locally, we're thrilled to be working with the Andrew County Health Department, where Fireworks Safety Coloring Books are now available for families. These books help children understand the basics of safety in a way that’s easy to remember and share.
We're also partnering with Regal Hollywood 10 Theaters and KKJO 105.5 to promote fireworks safety during their Summer Movie Canned Food Festival. Families attending will receive safety materials while helping support the Second Harvest Community Food Bank. It’s a fun, family-focused way to connect the joy of summer with the responsibility of safety. This campaign will run through the first week of July, just in time for Independence Day.
NFA tips for a safe and responsible fireworks celebration
The fireworks industry follows strong government regulations and voluntary safety standards, but it’s the actions of individual consumers that matter most on the front lines of safety. The NFA encourages everyone to review and share these safety reminders:
Before you light fireworks:
- Only buy fireworks from licensed and reputable dealers.
- Know and follow local laws and ordinances. When in doubt, check with your city, county, or local fire department.
- Always have a responsible, sober adult in charge of lighting fireworks.
- Never allow unsupervised children to handle fireworks.
- Read and follow all safety instructions printed on the label.
Personal safety matters:
- Always wear shoes when handling fireworks.
- Keep long hair tied back and avoid loose-fitting clothing.
- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
Using fireworks properly:
- Use fireworks outdoors only, away from buildings, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
- Light one item at a time and keep other fireworks at a safe distance.
- Never hold fireworks in your hand unless they are specifically designed to be held, such as sparklers.
- Never throw or point fireworks at another person.
- Never try to relight a “dud.” Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water.
Be prepared:
- Always have a garden hose or bucket of water nearby.
- "Block and brace" fireworks to prevent tipping.
- Do not alter or tamper with fireworks.
- Never attempt to make your own fireworks.
- Dispose of used fireworks in a metal trash can with a lid, away from your home or garage.
Don’t forget the pets:
- Fireworks can be stressful for animals. Keep pets inside in a quiet, safe space during celebrations.
A tradition worth protecting
Fireworks are a symbol of freedom, joy, and celebration—but they must be treated with respect. By following these safety practices and sharing them with others, you can help ensure that your celebration is remembered for all the right reasons.
At the NFA, we’re proud to support the continued use of fireworks in a way that brings people together safely. Please join us this season in promoting smart, safe celebrations—and helping preserve this beloved American tradition for generations to come.
