Tracking severe storm potential Tuesday evening

Monday brought another hot and humid day, with temperatures climbing close to 90°F this afternoon. Tonight, we’ll see a slight dip in temperatures as we gear up for an active Tuesday.

Overnight, a cold front will move through the area, bringing moisture and scattered rainfall to much of the region. This precipitation will continue into the early morning hours on Tuesday, with overnight lows expected to remain near 70°F. The first round of storms in the morning is not expected to be severe.

By Tuesday afternoon, temperatures will rise into the mid-80s. As we head into the evening hours, the risk for severe weather increases. The National Weather Service has placed our area under a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk. Neighboring counties, including Atchison County, KS, and southern Platte County, MO, are under a Level 3 risk.

The main threats from this system include damaging winds and large hail, though a brief spin-up tornado cannot be ruled out. Additionally, these storms are capable of producing very heavy and intense rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding Tuesday evening and overnight. Rainfall totals are expected to be around 2-3".

It is crucial to be prepared and have a reliable way to receive weather alerts, as this storm system is expected to impact the St. Joseph area during the overnight hours. Be sure to have the Storm Tracker Weather App downloaded to receive real-time alerts based on your location and to watch live coverage in case of power outages.

Looking ahead, storms will taper off early Wednesday morning, with skies clearing quickly. By Thursday, we’ll return to sunny conditions with highs in the upper 80s. From Friday through the weekend, expect extremely warm conditions, with heat indices approaching 100°F. It will be hot and humid, so be sure to stay hydrated and take precautions during the extreme heat.
