CHICAGO, Ill. – Susan Hamburger, 97, Chicago, Illinois, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025. She was born Dec. 13, 1927, in Breslau, Germany, to Walter and Lili (Meyer) Wollman.

Susan married Rabbi Wolfgang Hamburger on Dec. 25, 1955. He preceded her in death on March 20, 2012.

She earned her master’s degree in Education from the University of Chicago, then worked for the Division of Family Services in Missouri for many years as well as in other locations in the field of educational testing and diagnostics.

Susan’s final chapter included 11 years at Montgomery Place in Chicago, where she was an extremely active member of the community and much loved. She conducted welcoming tours for every new resident. She also had the opportunity to be close to her family and connect with a new generation in Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Wolfgang; her parents; her sister, Ilse Weiss; and her niece, Jennifer Rosenberg.

Survivors include her sister, Lucille Wolf; and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Graveside Farewell Service and Inurnment 9 a.m. Friday, Temple Adath Joseph Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS).
