Marvin White, 98, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025. Marvin was born on May 17, 1927, in Garretson, South Dakota, the son of the late Lynn and Olive (Swavely) White.

Marvin served in the U.S. Navy in 1946 and 1947 serving on the USS Tappahannock, USS Princeton, and the USS Curtiss. Receiving a World War II Victory Medal at his honorable discharge. He then owned and operated Marvin White Cabinet Shop as a custom cabinet maker for 55 years. He was proud of his work that is in homes throughout St. Joseph and out of state. He designed and built kitchen and bath cabinets and many unique custom projects. He also built five homes and sold four, moving into the first “spec” home.

He was an Elder in the 17th Street congregation, Community of Christ. He crafted many items for the church including the kitchen cabinets, oak handrails, and reinforcing a large wooden cross. And for the temple in Independence, Missouri, a communion table, pulpit and two lecterns.

After 78 years of marriage, he leaves behind his wife, Aleda (Spurgin) White, whom he married on April 26, 1947, in Sabetha, Kansas; daughter, Linda (Danny) McCulloch, of Dyersburg, Tennessee; and son, Dan White, of St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Olive, in 1929 who was struck by lightning when he was two years old; his mother who raised him, Jessie (Welsh) in 1949 who died in a car/train collision; twin sons, Donald and Ronald White; his parents, Lynn and Jessie; brothers, Merlin and Leland White; sisters, Marjorie Anderson and Gail Phillips.

At his request Marvin has been cremated with a celebration of life service scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Community of Christ 17th Street church 415 N. 17th Street, St. Joseph. As published in the St. Joseph News-Press.
