Tracking t-storm chances through the rest of the work week

Scattered thunderstorms developed just outside the St. Joseph region Monday evening, bringing much-needed rain to neighboring communities. Storm chances, however, are not stopping there. Thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the day Tuesday and linger into the weekend.

Morning temperatures are similar to Monday, holding in the mid- to upper 60s. It’s another T-shirt-and-shorts kind of start, but an umbrella or rain jacket may be necessary as rain chances increase through the afternoon, especially near school dismissal and the evening commute.

This afternoon’s storms are not expected to be severe, with key ingredients lacking. Still, heavy downpours, gusty winds, and small hail cannot be ruled out. Highs will climb near 86 degrees, keeping conditions above average but offering a break from the recent stretch of 90s.

More rain is expected Wednesday, with a 60% chance of showers and storms. Temperatures will also cool into the low to mid-80s, closer to seasonal averages.

September typically brings about 3.18 inches of rainfall to the St. Joseph area, but so far only 0.3 inches have been recorded. Forecast models suggest another inch of rain is possible over the next five days, offering some relief to the deficit.

Looking ahead to the weekend, conditions are expected to gradually dry out with highs settling into the upper 70s and low 80s, right on par with average for mid-September.
