Tracking a short warming trend before mid-week cool down

After a soggy few days across northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas, drier weather is finally in sight.

Rainfall over the past several days has been relatively light for most areas, but isolated heavy downpours did occur—particularly near the far northwestern corner of Buchanan County, close to Andrew County. In that area, a flash flood warning was issued due to high rainfall rates. Radar estimates show more than 5 inches of rain in a localized bullseye.

In the St. Joseph area, totals were significantly lower, with most locations receiving less than half an inch of rain.

Showers are expected to taper off over the next few hours as the system continues to move to the northeast. High temperatures today only reached the mid- to upper 60s, nearly 20 degrees below average for this time of year. Overnight lows will fall to the mid-50s.

For Tuesday morning, parents and students heading back to school or work should prepare for a cool start, with temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s. A few stray sprinkles are possible. Skies will gradually clear throughout the day, allowing highs to climb to around 76 degrees.

By Wednesday, temperatures will climb a bit more, reaching near 78 ahead of an approaching cold front. That front is expected to move into Missouri by Wednesday afternoon, bringing a chance for thunderstorms and cooler air behind it.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region, south of highway 36, under a marginal risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe weather on Wednesday. The primary threats will be small hail and gusty winds.

Behind the front, much cooler air will settle in. Overnight lows will dip into the upper 40s, with daytime highs only reaching the upper 60s to low 70s to close out the week.
