US–Election 2028-Democrats-Iowa Caucus

Iowa Democrats consider bringing back lead off caucuses, even if it means going ‘rogue’ in 2028

SUMMARY: Iowa’s state party officials say it was a mistake that the party’s 2024 nominating calendar forced them to ditch the five-decade, first-in-the-nation caucus where community members publicly signal their support for a candidate. The state party’s criticism comes with an open threat of defying the national party’s orders in 2028 just days before national Democrats gather for their annual summer meeting. Iowa Democrats are looking to bring the once-competitive, rural and agricultural Midwest state back on the radar of a party questioning its values, direction and future leaders. In 2022, President Joe Biden forced a shake-up of the 2024 election calendar, moving South Carolina’s primary ahead of contests in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada.

US–Election-2026-Redistricting-Other States

What states are doing in the battle for partisan advantage in US House maps

SUMMARY: Texas Republicans and California Democrats are battling for partisan advantage in U.S. House maps. And their fight may spread to other states. Republican state lawmakers in Texas are backing revised congressional districts at the prodding of President Donald Trump. California Democrats are doing likewise at the urging of Gov. Gavin Newsom. Politicians in both states are trying to give their party a chance to win as many as five more seats in next year’s congressional elections. Officials in other states, such as Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, New York and Maryland, also are considering redrawing congressional districts to try to gain a  partisan advantage.

Minnesota State Fair butter sculpture tradition has dairy princesses bundling up in the summer

SUMMARY: Malorie Thorson, the newly crowned 72nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way, has embraced a unique tradition at the Minnesota State Fair. On Thursday, she sat bundled up in a rotating glass studio as sculptor Gerry Kulzer carved a likeness of her head from a 90-pound block of butter. This event marks the start of the fair and honors the state’s dairy farm families. Several other state fairs across the country also feature butter sculptures. The Iowa State Fair has been famous for its annual life-sized Butter Cow for over a century. A replica goes on display Saturday at the Smithsonian in Washington.

US–Last WWII Ace Dies

America’s last living ace pilot from World War II dies at age 103

SUMMARY: A World War II veteran from Nebraska believed to be America’s last surviving “ace” pilot because he shot down five enemy planes has died. Donald McPherson’s death at age 103 earlier this month was first reported by the Beatrice Daily Sun. The Fagen Fighters WWII Museum and the American Fighter Aces Association both listed McPherson as the last surviving WWII ace. US–Funeral Home-Corpse Abuse

Funeral home owner who stashed nearly 200 decaying bodies set to be sentenced for corpse abuse

SUMMARY: Two years after piles of decaying bodies were found in a rural Colorado building, a funeral home owner is set to be sentenced for 191 counts of corpse abuse. Jon Hallford, who owned Return to Nature Funeral Home, ran a fraudulent scheme with his wife from their business in Colorado Springs. Instead of cremating bodies as families requested, he dumped them in a bug-infested building. Hallford gave families dry concrete resembling ashes and pocketed the cremation fees. He and his wife acknowledged defrauded the government out of nearly $900,000 in COVID-19 aid for small businesses.
