NEBRASKA – UPCOMING – NEWS

——————————

US–RARE EARTHS

DESCRIPTION: Domestic production of the strong magnets needed in electric vehicles, robots, jet fighters and other high-tech products is expected to expand rapidly in the coming years, as the Trump administration is ramping up efforts to rebuild the U.S. critical mineral industry to eventually break the chokehold Beijing has over its global supply chain. Hundreds of millions in federal funds are flowing to U.S. mining, processing and manufacturing companies, and the administration has made a bold move of agreeing to a price floor in one case the industry hopes will be replicated. It has launched a national security investigation into foreign-made critical mineral products, and Congress has approved billions of dollars towards the goal of achieving independence from China. RECONSIDERING SPEED LIMITS

DESCRIPTION: A recent surge in U.S. traffic fatalities has the federal government and some states seeking to back away from their longstanding reliance on a nearly century-old rule used to set speed limits. Under the so-called 85% rule, the 15th-fastest driver out of every 100 traveling a given road essentially sets the ideal posted speed. Safety activists say there are numerous flaws with this approach, which has been embraced in both Republican- and Democratic-led states. But finding a universally accepted replacement to the rule has proven tricky.

FBC–PICK SIX-SMALL-COLLEGE STARS

DESCRIPTION: Bryce Lance could have cited plenty of reasons if he had chosen to leave North Dakota State for a Football Bowl Subdivision program for his senior season. Lance decided he had more a compelling case to stick around. The younger brother of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Trey Lance is back at North Dakota State after helping the Bison win the 2024 FCS title while catching 17 touchdown passes to lead all Football Championship Subdivision players. He heads our list of players to watch from outside the FBS programs. By Steve Megargee. 850 words, with photos, expected by 10 a.m.

SOUTH DAKOTA – UPCOMING – NEWS

——————————

US GOLD MINING-BLACK HILLS

DESCRIPTION: It was gold mining that prompted a rush of white settlers who displaced Native Americans in South Dakota’s Black Hills in the 1870s, and 150 years later a new crop of miners are seeking approval to dig test sites and ultimately return to the area beloved by tourists and nature lovers. But gold extraction has changed dramatically over the decades and while a prospector panning in a stream might once have been the image of mining, the industry now relies on massive trucks and diggers that create deep, multi-tiered pits that can never be returned to their previous appearance. The effort promises a boost to an area that long has struggled economically but opponents question the environmental and quality of life costs.
