The Northwest Missouri Longtails Chapter of Pheasants Forever will sponsor their annual free youth fishing day at a private lake in Andrew County in June.
Steve Meyer, treasurer for the chapter, said the free fishing event in Missouri will be held the first Saturday in June and it allows participants to legally fish without purchasing a license.
He said the goal of the event is to introduce fishing to young anglers and provide them an opportunity to participate in the outdoors.
“We want youth to be involved in outdoor activities whether it be fishing or hunting,” Meyer. “We want to give them an opportunity to enjoy nature and be outside.”
The private lake is managed to be accessible to anglers and includes bass and crappie.
“We are fortunate that the landowner is in favor of us holding this event,” Meyer. “They have built a lake that is beautiful to go out there and fish. Every year it grows in success.”
The fishing day is catch-and-release.
Meyer said some fishing equipment will be available for free on site or anglers can bring their own. Bait and hooks will be provided.
He said the event is open to families with kids between 5 and 15 years old.
A free lunch will also be provided to youth and their guardians. A youth must be accompanied by an adult.
The fishing day event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on June 1 on private property west of Savanna, Missouri. The rain date is June 8.
Pre-registration is required by contacting Meyer by phone at 816-718-4845 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
