Northwest Missouri State has named three candidates to become the Bearcat’s next director of athletics.

University President Dr. John Jasinski announced Monday that it will hold interviews this week, nearly three months since Mel Tjeerdsma retired from the position after five years.

The three candidates include Andy Peterson, Steven Schofield and Mike Waddell. The candidates were selected by a search committee that, according to Jasinski, included nine individuals.

Peterson was named Tjeerdsma’s replacement on an interim basis back in April. Of the three candidates, he’s the most familiar with Northwest.

Peterson has worked in the athletic department at Northwest since 2011 in capacities such as interim athletic director, assistant athletics director as well as the head coach for the women’s golf team and the assistant coach for the men’s basketball team.

The current interim director of athletics for the Bearcats is working on earning his doctorate from the University of Missouri in educational leadership and policy analysis.

Schofield currently serves as the Deputy Director of Athletics for Administration at the University of Northern Iowa. He has worked at Northern Iowa since 2006. He also holds experience at the Divison I level.

Schofield’s 17 years of professional experience have taken him to Florida State University, University of Maryland and at the University of Minnesota. He served as the assistant director of athletics for compliance for all three universities.

Since 2016, Waddell has been the vice president of Marketing and Communication for the International Speedway Corporation’s Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Virginia.

Waddell has the most experience of the three candidates, with 28 years under his belt. His resume includes time as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations and Strategic Communication at the University of Illinois and at the University of Arkansas.

Waddell also served as the director of athletics at Towson University, senior associate director of athletics for external operations at the University of Cincinnati and as an interim director of athletics, associate director of athletics for external operations and assistant director of athletics for external operations at the University of Akron.

Interviews begin today with Waddell. Schofield will interview on Wednesday while Peterson will round out the group and interview on Thursday. These interviews will not be open forums.
