The St. Joseph Mustangs’ regular season ended anticlimactically, as their final scheduled game of the season against the Chillicothe Mudcats was canceled due to rain Sunday at Phil Welch Stadium.
The Mustangs’ grounds crew fought the inclement weather in vain, returning the field to playing condition after a 90-minute delay only for the game to be called off for good after one inning.
Highlighting the singular period of play was a solo home run from Jackson Dierenfeldt. It would have been his second home run of the season.
The Mustangs now prepare for the postseason. Having compiled a league-leading 29-8 conference record, the Mustangs will now host the winner of the Chillicothe/Sedalia playoff game on Wednesday at Phil Welch Stadium as they compete for their second MINK title in three years.
The winner will advance to a best-of-three series against the MINK South Champion beginning Thursday at the site of the lower seed. The Mustangs would host Games 2 and 3 if they advance.
