The St. Joseph Mustangs are set to begin their 10th season this summer, and on Wednesday the club announced its slate of summer games.
Opening Day will be Wednesday, May 30 against the Midwest A’s. The two teams met in last year’s season opener, a 9-1 win for the Mustangs in front of a record 4,489 fans at Phil Welch Stadium.
“We’re excited to celebrate 10 wonderful years in St. Joe with more to come,” Mustangs General Manager Ky Turner said in a press release. “Opening Day has almost become a holiday in St. Joe, and we’re planning some fun events for May 30. We love our community here. We’re excited to open the gates here at the ballpark for our Mustangs family.”
The Mustangs are a five-time league champion and are coming off a MINK League title last year. The team will begin its 10th year without manager Matt Johnson, who announced at the end of last season that he was retiring.
The Mustangs replaced the longtime leader with St. Joseph native Johnny Coy shortly afterward. It will be the first season without Johnson in the dugout.
Coy looks to continue the success Johnson and the prior teams have gained throughout their summers in town. Turner added several events will return this season as well.
“We’re bringing some new surprises to Phil Welch, but we are also returning some of our fan favorites,” Turner said. “One favorite we’re bringing back is Team USA Military Baseball on July 3. That game will feature a special ceremony honoring our local military members, but we’re also going to host the American Fallen Soldiers Project to honor a family that day.”
Returning this season is $1 hot dogs every Thursday night, $1 beers every Friday night and fireworks every Saturday night at home this summer.
All games are slated to start at 7 p.m.
The MINK All-Star Game is set for Wednesday, June 27 in Joplin. The Mustangs will host Sedalia on the Fourth of July. And the MINK League playoffs begin Wednesday, July 25 and will run through Sunday, July 29.
