MARYVILLE, Mo. — A pair of comeback stories helped Maryville volleyball to a sweep over Bishop LeBlond Thursday night at Maryville High School.
After trailing by 10 points in the first set, the Spoofhounds took a 25-21 victory. Maryville fought back from a five-point deficit in the second set to win 28-26.
For Maryville (4-1) coach Marissa Felt, the win represents the result of a complete effort from each of her athletes.
“It really came down to teamwork,” Felt said. “This was a conference game for us. The girls knew they didn’t want to lose this one. We’ve been focusing on team work all season and tonight it showed a lot.”
Both teams battled back and forth in the first set before before the Golden Eagles (2-2) pulled ahead to a five-point lead.
In effort to spark communication, Felt called a timeout. It took a bit for things to get going, as LeBlond developed a seven-point command.
“I told the girls, ‘Get your shovels out and start digging,’” Felt said. “It takes all three of the back row to start talking. Then our front row really picked it up too right when we needed them.”
Once teamwork solidified, Maryville ran its column of the scoreboard up, earning 11 unanswered points to take a 22-18 lead.
The Eagles attempted to pull back from behind, but had a hard time doing such.
“We just got stuck there in the first set with the server,” LeBlond coach Kim Huss. “We got caught in it and never really recovered.”
The Spoofhounds pulled ahead 7-5 to start the second set. The difference didn’t grow any larger until LeBlond pulled ahead 14-11.
The Eagles’ lead never grew larger than five. Maryville began to narrow the LeBlond lead after.
“Every time we got an opportunity in the second set, it just seemed we got ahead of ourselves,” Huss said.
LeBlond and Maryville countered off of each other to end the set, tying the game five times before Maryville earned the final point.
“The whole team work helped us get back in the game,” Felt said.
The Eagles continue their season Monday, Sept. 10 as they host St. Michael the Archangel. The Spoofhounds travel to Excelsior Springs for a matchup with the Tigers on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
