Bishop LeBlond senior Hank Lierz is heading into his final state tournament with a head of steam.

The Kansas signee fired a 2-over 73 to back up his Class 1 District 8 championship with a Class 1 Sectional 4 title Monday at Shirkey Golf Course in Richmond, Missouri.

Lierz, a three-time state runner-up in Class 2, shot the third best score in all Class 1 sectionals across Missouri on Monday.

The senior fended off sophomore Jeff Johnston, who shot a 7-over 78 to claim second place. Johnston finished third at state a year ago, as LeBlond claimed the team title for the second time in three years.

The Golden Eagles captured the team title with a four-man score of 336 to win sectionals.

Coming up in second place and also qualifying for next week’s state tournament was Mid-Buchanan, led by a third-place finish from Tristen Dye. Dye fired an 8-over 79 for one of only three sub-80 rounds.

Mid-Buchanan fended off district champion Plattsburg by two strokes with a total of 353. Boston deJong placed in the top 10 with a 14-over 85.

Still, the Tigers will be represented at state by fourth-place Klayton Kennedy (80) and Shelby Dickerson (91). King City’s Collin Breckenridge (82) rounded out the top five.

Rock Port, Mound City, Gallatin and Hamilton will also send individuals to Sedalia Country Club on Monday for the start of the Class 1 state championship.

Maryville qualifies two in Class 2

The Spoofhounds will represented at Springfield’s Rivercut Golf Course by a pair of golfers.

Trevin Cunningham fired a 12-over 84 to place in a tie for 17th Monday at Green Hills Golf Course in Brookfield, Missouri.

He advances to the Class 2 championship, along with 19th-place Connor Durbin. He finished one stroke back of Cunningham.

St. Pius X won the event with a 321, six strokes ahead of Palmyra. Maryville finished with a 348.

St. Pius X’s Cole Elling won with a 1-over 73.

Cameron’s Howell heads

to Class 3 state

Cameron Dragons golfer Trey Howell finished in seventh place with an 8-over 80 Monday at Excelsior Springs Golf Course to advance to next week’s Class 3 state tournament at Columbia Country Club.

Clinton’s Austin Gillund won with a 3-over round of 75.

Pembroke Hill’s 326 and Warrensburg’s 336 advanced the two teams to state.

No city golfers outside Bishop LeBlond qualified for state. Sectional qualifiers included: John Gregory, St. Joseph Christian; Gabe Hinton, Lafayette; and the Central foursome of Jaxon Nurski, Jack Corcoran, Kristian Duvall and Andrew Spitzer Fox.
