The Central girls basketball team will compete in Florida this winter thanks to the community’s support.
The Indians are hosting a golf tournament Saturday to help raise money for traveling expenses. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at Duncan Hills Golf Course in Savannah, Missouri.
“The fundraising money will go toward our flight and hotel,” Central coach Jared Boone said. “We’re doing a very good job at fundraising so far and we still have some ways to go. Hopefully this golf tournament can help put a huge dent in what we have left.”
The golf fundraiser will be a four-person scramble with shotgun start times. Guests are asked to arrive no later than 12:30 p.m. for cart assignments and other announcements.
Boone heard other coaches talk about the KSA Events Holiday Basketball Tournament in Orlando, Florida. After learning more about the tournament, Boone wanted to offer his team the special opportunity.
The idea of taking the trip was then brought to Central’s Athletic Director David Lau.
“It was about this time last year when he came to me,” Lau said. “We felt that this team is a strong team as far as what they can accomplish so we thought that would be a great opportunity for them.”
This trip will be the first time a Central team has gone beyond Missouri and Kansas to compete.
The Indians will play against teams from all over the country, including New York, Texas, Colorado, and California.
“This will be a fantastic experience. It’s not always you get an opportunity to travel as a group. This is really going to bring that team together,” Lau said.
Boone has been organizing the upcoming fundraiser for several months and is excited to see the community supporting his team.
The registration fee for Saturday’s event is $75 per person. Each participant will be provided a meal after the tournament. The winning team will receive a $400 cash price as well as a free round of golf at Duncan Hills Golf Course.
The second-place team will be awarded two general admission season tickets for the St. Joseph Mustangs 2020 season.
