Central seniors Matt Austin, Chanden Bell and Jaiden Bristol walk to receive the championship trophy after defeating North Kansas City in the William Jewell Holiday Tournament earlier this season.

Former Central star Matt Austin announced Tuesday he will commit to Benedictine College to continue his basketball career.

“Thankful and blessed to announce that I will be committing to Benedictine to further my career and education,” Austin shared via Twitter.

Austin was named the NJCAA Region 16 Player of the Year and a second-team All-American last season. After transferring to Metropolitan CC in Kansas City from Seward County CC, Austin averaged 22 points per game as a sophomore.

The St. Joseph native will reunite with former Central teammate Jaiden Bristol and Benton graduate Saxton Thuston.

The Ravens finished with a 24-0 record in the Heart of America Conference under head coach Ryan Moody. Benedictine finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 31-4 after falling in the second round of the NAIA Championship Tournament to the University of Pikeville (Kentucky).

Austin shot 48.8 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from 3-point range. His points-per-game average ranked 13th in the country.

The 2017 Central grad eclipsed 30 points five times, scoring a season-high 40 points on Nov. 17. He made 12 of 23 shots and finished 8-for-12 from 3-point range in the loss to Des Moines Area CC.
