No. 2 Benedictine opened its 2019 campaign with a blowout victory Saturday in Lamoni, Iowa.
The Ravens traveled to Iowa where they defeated Graceland University 72-7 in their first game as part of the HEART South Division. The Ravens were picked to win the division.
Benedictine wasted no time getting on the board. The Ravens got its first of 10 touchdowns within the first 60 seconds.
Ravens running back Marquis Stewart scored the Ravens’ first three touchdowns on the night. The senior delivered a 3-yard touchdown in the first quarter to increase the Raven’s lead to 20.
The Yellowjackets respond with less than four minutes on the clock in the first quarter. Graceland quarterback Austin Sowers threw his first touchdown of the season with a 69-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Donte Sylencieux. With the extra point, Graceland trailed 21-7.
Last season, the Ravens scored 27 in the first quarter against Graceland, one point less than this year. Benedictine led 28-7 heading into the second quarter.
The lone score in the second quarter was Teagan Trammel with a 24-yard field goal.
The Ravens started off the second half leading 31-7.
Benedictine began the third quarter with an early touchdown run courtesy of running back Charles Nihart. The senior was able to go in for another touchdown later in the quarter, giving the Ravens a 44-7 advantage.
The Ravens extended the lead after running back Isaac McPherson dove his way into the end zone with less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Yellowjackets struggled to find momentum. They allowed three interceptions and gave up several fumbles by the end of the third quarter.
The Ravens led 51-7 into the fourth quarter where running backs KJ Heart, Marlon Moorer, and fullback Dalton Cole added to Benedictine’s total.
The last time the Ravens lost to Yellowjackets was in 2015. Benedictine is home next week against William Penn.
