St Joseph Mustangs starting pitcher Brandon Covington didn’t have a good start in Chillicothe Monday night.

Covington gave up four runs in the first and had no offensive support through the rest of the game. As a result, the Mustangs fell to the Mudcats 8-2.

St. Joseph finished the night with just three hits, each coming off Chillicothe pitcher Trae Brownell.

Brownell pitched through seven innings, giving up both Mustangs runs of the night. He had one strikeout.

Chillicothe took advantage of early errors by the Mustangs as an error by catcher Jordan Maxson scored Cole Taylor with one out.

The damage furthered when Cole Quick doubled off Covington, scoring Cole Taylor and Nate Gawelko. Dalton Robinson scored Cole Quick, giving Chillicothe a 4-0 lead.

The Mudcasts continued to beat up Covington in the bottom of the second, as a Andrews Williams single scored Peyton Cormane.

Covington lasted through the fifth inning. He gave up 10 hits and seven runs, striking out eight.

The Mustangs offense opened up in the bottom of the seventh earning their first run on a Mason Janvrin RBI single. Their final run was scored as Brownell walked Joshua Lincoln with the bases loaded.

Ronnie Wigginton gave up the final Mudcats run of the game a half inning later.

The Mustangs travel to Clarinda tonight to take on the A’s. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. After a day off tomorrow, St. Joseph will take on the A’s again Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium.
