If a child is being abused or neglected, it takes just one person to change that child's life. Deborah White believes she can be that person.
“I hope I'm making a difference,” said Ms. White, a pediatric registered nurse at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
The Dearborn, Mo., woman has spent a lifetime offering support and a career making sure children are taken care of. She is an executive board member of the Youth Alliance, giving her time to help coordinate positive programs and activities for youth in our region. Ms. White spearheads the Safe Sleep Program to prevent unsafe sleep habits and Safe Haven Program which gives desperate mothers a place to take their children instead of abandoning them.
She is currently working to bring Safe Exams to the region. The program is intended to train local medical professionals to be equipped to perform exams on children who are victims of sexual abuse.
Ms. White is taking classes to do this as well as studying to become a nurse practitioner.
“I think I wanted to make a bigger contribution to the community and commitment to the kids,” she said. “They're in my heart. I am just in love with kids. They're our future so what better people to focus your love on than kids.”
