Placeholder It's Your Call

Vlad to the bone

Let’s talk about President Donald Trump’s friends, many of which are in prison at this very minute. But let’s talk about his best of friends, like North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He stood in from of the whole world and said he believes Putin over all our intelligence agencies. Not just the FBI — all of them. That’s the friends your president has. He’s certainly not my president.

All the power

Democrats call our president a hatemonger and a racist. They poke him with sharp sticks 24/7 and then they call him down if he raises a hand to defend himself. The president has helped create many thousands of jobs, and Democrats want open borders to put us back in the hole. Democrats don’t want prosperity; they just want all the power, and they will stop at nothing to get it.

Word on wind

I hope the citizens of Buchanan County are not asleep at the wheel in regard to potential placement of wind turbines in the northeast part of the county. A meeting at the Planning and Zoning is Wednesday evening. If you have an interest in giving your thoughts, please attend.

Check up

I see the police dropped the ball again. The mother of the shooter in El Paso, Texas, called the police and told them she didn’t think her son was mature enough to have a gun like he had. And they failed to do anything about it. If somebody calls in like that, they should at least check out what’s going on and give them some kind of mental evaluation. Maybe that’s one thing they could do when people buy guns, have some kind of mental test they can do for them. Because it’s not the guns that kill people, it’s the people’s mental health problems.

Special delivery

I saw on the news where we have more killings, it was stabbings this time. I guess we’re going to have to take everybody’s knives away. Putting people in a penitentiary for the rest of their lives is not the answer to these killings. I think we need to send them over to Russia, or Iraq; they know how to take care of people.

Not so funny

I find it laughable that Andrew County officials would blame the farming economy for the failure of the Savannah R-III School District tax levy increase. It’s the school board that should take the blame. Why would Andrew County voters vote for a levy with no sunset clause and for a performing arts center that had been promised in the previous levy?

Island of woe

All of you people who think you want to get rid of Donald Trump, just look at the catastrophe they’re having in Puerto Rico. You better be careful what you wish for. We could end up living like those people, and those people are used to doing without; we are not, and most couldn’t even cope.

Not exactly the “American Dream,” is it? “ Acting USCIS director Ken Cuccinelli saying on NPR this morning that the Statue of Liberty plaque should be changed to read, "give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet, and who will not become a public charge.”

Marty_Chuzzlewit

Does Pajama Boy think the "American Dream" of legal immigrants is to go on the public dole?

aj0201

Pajama boy? Our immigration policy is guided by “bring me your huddled masses,” etc. Of course nobody wants to be on the public dole but when that is the guiding principle, it doesn’t jive much with the traditional view of immigration.

popski

Actually, the traditional view of immigration is of immigrants who came here, legally, and who worked their tails off to make something of themselves. Many of them spent lots of time at Ellis Island, near the Statue, while their applications for citizenship were processed. I have family members who came here, legally, and who became citizens and who have never taken a penny from public assistance. They worked hard...sometimes more than one job...to make ends meet. It's illogical to consider allowing people to just waltz into the US, without legal status...and then to expect someone else to pay their way. I have no problem with people from ANYWHERE coming here, but do it legally. Once you're here...contribute.

Marty_Chuzzlewit

14% of American residents who receive public assistance have legal residence status or are waiting for green card status. It isn't a small matter

aj0201

I don’t disagree. What I’m saying is I don’t appreciate the assumption that immigrants are coming to be on the dole. That’s how I read that. It’s not welcoming and he isn’t just talking about illegals.

popski

I think many immigrants, both legal and illegal, come here and work hard. There ARE those who do not. I don't believe we own them anything except a chance...the legal immigrants, that is. The illegals shouldn't be eligible for any assistance whatsoever...but, hey, that's just my opinion.

aj0201

I’m not far from that. I don’t think we owe illegals anything but life saving, emergency type assistance. We shouldn’t let anyone die. You and I agree on pathways to citizenship though.

great idea......

I know this is off topic. But thought it was worth commenting on. President Trump has done more for Christianity around the world than former Presidents Obama and Bush. Christianity may not be under attack on a large scale in the US. But around the world it is. We as Christians needs to continue to pray for our Country and President. I've sit aside some time each day to do just that

Don't expect any type of reply aj. Remember jdw is part of the " do as I preach and not as I do" part of your faith. As Colo stated it will be the deise of hocus pocus in the end.

Word on wind - I have never been able to understand the objection to the wind turbines...a clean, renewable energy source. The faux objections (noise, unsightly, etc) are bogus...and only lame excuses for not wanting them around. I have a challenge...if you object to wind turbines...don't just object. Offer an alternative that is just as clean and just as renewable.

jdw64485

The problem is they can't offer an alternative.

I think eventually science will find a way of using the sun's energy--which should still last for at least a couple of billion years.

aj0201

Agreed. Wind is a great source of energy because as a source, it’s free! Solar isn’t an alternative, it’s an addition. Between solar and wind we have free energy just waiting to be had. The cost of infrastructure is going down. I’m encouraged to see so many homes and businesses install solar panels.

zzsnot303

i have stood under a wind turbine, there is really NO noise, and i think they are a beautiful addition to the landscape

aj0201

I agree. Not much noise. They were an acquired taste for me. At first they seemed out of place, but I’ve gotten used to seeing them.

jdw64485

I for one have never found one single dead bird. Not saying it hasn't happened.

aj0201

I’m sure it does, but cats kill birds too. As do cars. I hit what I think was an owl the other evening. It happens.

popski

I've seen a lot of dead birds on the road that cars have hit. I don't hear the same folks complaining about banning cars...

munchman

But what about the cancer t rump said is caused by them?

beelog

What do you think of weatherman Mike Thompson's opinion on windmills?

aj0201

Not much. He talks a lot about the cost and maintenance. The thing is, there is a lot of maintenance going on at Iatan. There is a lot of maintenance going on at coal mines. They use a lot of oil to keep things running. And in the end, there is a continuous cost to keeping coal mining going. On the other hand, wind turbines do require some lubrication and certainly some maintenance. But the source of the energy is free and requires no additional labor to get. Wind happens whether there is a turbine there or not. It’s powered pumps on farms for a long long time. Coal, left in the ground, is useless. It requires cost to get it out. No such cost for the wind.

Check up there is a mental exam called the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Test which contractors going in to work in a nuclear plant must take to show they are stable and mentally capable of working their. It is a 520 question text made of of question that are either answered yes or no. Now the NRA has argued of years to let anybody with the money to pay to their main constituents, the gun manufacturers, can get a gun including radical foreign and domestic terrorist. We can get ahold of this problem with guns by establishing laws where we can find out who has and where all the guns are by requiring all guns to be registered just like all cars, motorcycles, and boats are. And the penalty for getting caught with an unregistered gun should be a hard ten year sentence and ten thousand dollar fine and confiscation of all the guilty person's guns. I think there should be high taxes on ammunition. These taxes can be applied as a victim relief fund. There should be a waiting period for taking possession of firearms and an age limit for purchasing. This progressive plan does not go against the second amendment in any way and only calls for the confiscation of guns from those who commit a felony of non-registration or are deemed mentally unfit for gun ownership. I know I would have no problem keeping the numerous firearms I possess because It wouldn't bother me a bit to register them or take the MMPI test which I have taken multiple times and passed with flying colors. The aluminum foil hat conspiracy nuts might have to worry about that test,

Sociallyunacceptable

We only have your word for it that you passed this test. The way you've harassed and threatened people on this forum would give evidence that you shouldn't have possession of a cap gun.

popski

This is exactly the problem with the "red flag" proposal currently being made. While I disagree with munchman on a daily basis...and although we differ greatly in our view of religion and politics...I see no evidence that would make me think he shouldn't have guns. Munchman has never, to my knowledge, ever threatened anyone. He is caustic in his remarks, specifically about religion, but never exhibited violence of any kind. Yet, you say he shouldn't even own or use a cap gun. The idea that we say things like that about others indicates how the "red flag" law could be used negatively to improperly restrict people from owning and using firearms.

Social, I hope you don't take this as an overt criticism...but I DO hope you stop to think about it a bit. We can surely find ways to disagree...agreeably!!

aj0201

Agreed. The President suggested that CNNs Chris Cuomo be a “red flag” candidate due to cussing out someone who insulted him in front of his wife and kid. Too much subjectivity for those laws. At first, I agreed with the President about red flag laws, not anymore.

popski

I agree...although tossing a "red flag" at real issues should still be something we do. I'd call the police if I heard someone actually talking about doing something bad...something that would hurt or kill people. To toss a "red flag" simply because someone cusses someone out...or because they have a different point of view, politically or about religion, etc...those aren't good reasons.

Many of us in this forum disagree almost on a daily basis, and yet, I still maintain that were I to meet ANYONE in this forum in person, I have no doubt I'd be able to find common ground enough to be friends!! That's the nature of being human!!

Comment deleted.
JohnQTaxpayer

You obviously need to give Trump an eviction notice from your head. Since you can't answer anything and only have ad hominem attacks for your argument, shows what a truly ignorant loser you really are.

popski

I, too, own a number of weapons, and I have no problem with registration. I even think guns should be restricted just like cars are, i.e. periodic registration, required training, license to own and operate one, and required titling, much like cars. I also feel if you sell a gun, you should have to transfer the "title" to it to the new owner, just like a car. Here's the problem, though...like with cars...you will always have people who ignore the law and possess and use guns without following the laws. People drive without licensing and titling. People drive without required insurance. If you get caught, however, penalties can be severe...and that could be the case with guns, too.

While I could embrace the above suggestions, I also know that the root cause of all these shootings has nothing whatsoever to do with the inanimate gun. The root problem is the flawed human who wields the gun...the lack of respect for human life...the selfish ambition to "have what I want, regardless what damage it causes"...the raw hatred of others, etc, etc, etc.

Until we, as a society, address those root, human issues, we will never stop these senseless killings.

zzsnot303

excellent points popski

munchman

Surprisingly I agree with you 100%!!![thumbup]

popski

Munchman...this is proof that you and I CAN find common ground and agree on some things!! Maybe the things on which we disagree aren't all that significant. I've always maintained that I could probably be friends with just about anyone.

Funny thing...I have a step-daughter who is in lock-step with most of what you post. I love her dearly and she is equally affectionate in return. Goes to show...even in spite of our differences, we can still have good relationship!!

aj0201

I absolutely agree. So, what is the root “human issue” that causes this? People have tried to put bogus information about psychotropic meds as the reason, ignoring some obvious gaps in logic. If it were purely a “human issue” shared across the entire population of the world, we’d expect the rate of homicide and the rate of “mass homicide” to be somewhat uniform around the world. It isn’t. On the list of countries with the highest number of gun deaths, the US is by far the most advanced economic nation on the list. Most countries are second tier or third world nations. So why does the most prosperous nation on earth, pop up among thes far less advantaged countries when it comes to killing our own?

zzsnot303

drugs are more profitable than working a job, welfare benefits are too hefty thus an incentive not to work, too many pop-out unwanted babies from parents with no self control, too many baby daddies absent from the kid's lives....there are MANY MANY things that cause and affect...the list goes on, never ending

aj0201

From a purely homicide issue, I agree. But so many of these mass shooter types don’t come from poverty it seems.

popski

I think it's a heart issue. People who have no regard for life...no respect for others...no concern about how their actions affect others.

aj0201

Bingo. There is only one country from Africa in the top ten or twenty of the most gun deaths in the world. But much of Africa is very much in poverty. But some of those countries have some of the friendliest, most content people you’ll ever find. Iceland has had one gun murder in a decade. Yet it’s population of similar to St Louis which is the most violent city in the US. Iceland also prescribes psychotropic meds at nearly the same rate as the US. Nicaragua is the most violent country in the world. They rarely prescribe psychotropic meds.

beelog

We have always idolized successful people in this country---movie stars, music stars, athletes. People strive for recognition (dare I say even on this forum albeit under an assumed name). There are those who, for whatever reason, do not achieve that desired recognition through the normal channels but still desire it to the point that it becomes an obsession with them. In some communities, particularly among the young, recognition comes from being the "baddest dude" in the neighborhood. In that case, those "not as tough" resort to an "equalizer", a gun. I do not claim to have an answer, and I imagine it is as complex as the human mind.

James Bond1

One thing we should have is a better analysis of the statistics. I believe a lot of those statistics come from highly narrow statistical areas such as the south side of Chicago. It is a group that is mostly black and has most of the "incidents". Lets get it all on the table and then discuss it.

aj0201

But race has nothing to do with why they are shooting each other. That part is irrelevant.

James Bond1

aj0201...…...I notice you don't explain your conclusion. I don't see any reason or logic for your conclusion. The statistics are significant...……..how do you overcome them.

JohnQTaxpayer

Nicaraguans aside, most mass shooters that have 'snapped' are found to be on or suddenly 'off' some kind of SSRI drugs. Check the Law-enforcement statics, Vaj... [whistling]

JohnQTaxpayer

Meant to say, 'shooters in America'

aj0201

Why does America have mass shooters and Iceland doesn’t? They prescribe SSRI as frequently as the US.

aj0201

James, is your conclusion that black people are more violent because of the pigment of their skin?

James Bond1

aj0201...…………...that would not be true. I am far from qualified in the numerous dimensions of such a conclusion...…...I am not a chemist......so I don't know of the possible dimensions of a bullet. I am not a psychologist so I wouldn't know the implications (conclusions) of a human being I might occasionally offer a personal conclusion but I would certainly provide it as an opinion but only that.

James Bond1

aj0201...……….my remarks are based on several things...…….one is what I have read in numerous newspapers including the Chicago papers. I would observed based on my personal exposure of numerous visits to the area ( numerous would be several hundred......walking.....riding...…) and lastly, reflecting what I have heard from individuals who live in Chicago.....all segments of Chicago...…...you see, I went to school there and met many, many folks who live in every area of the City. So, that is a reasonable base to at least have a personal opinion......which I expressed.

aj0201

James, are you saying that black people kill because they’re black? Quit dancing around and answer the question.

munchman

Agreed Popski!

zzsnot303

munchie... you are absolutely correct on the gun issue

munchman

There are a lot of questions surrounding the death of Jeffrey Epstein. Was it gross incompetence?

munchman

I believe it was him committing suicide Aunty, however I'm am sure there are plenty of right wing nuts who that it was murder. I'm just saying.

Sociallyunacceptable

Maybe he actually did commit suicide but more to the point, if he was on suicide watch and then suddenly removed, who allowed it to happen and to what end?

popski

Maybe he kept talking about killing himself until guards decided, "OK...if that's what you want, go ahead." If the reports of the horrific things he allegedly did are true, perhaps it's best this way. I know a few monstrous individuals who have preyed on young folks who are walking around, scot free...and they have no remorse for what they did. Anyone who would molest an underaged individual is lower than the dirt we walk on and I don't appreciate sharing breathing air with them....

zzsnot303

i can't wait to see the opinion of AJ on this hahaha

WakeUpUS

Epstein claimed didn't attempt suicide in July, & that 'he was attacked'. Find your own sources, vaj.

WakeUpUS

You don't turn on the Clintons & the British Royal Family. Dead men tell no tales.

zzsnot303

supposedly Sir Jeffrey was taken off suicide watch by the warden, based on recommendation of the jail psychiatrist

aj0201

Since you ask, it’s pretty simple to me. Occam’s razor. The easiest explanation usually fits best. His guilt drove him to suicide.

aj0201

Given the information we have, that’s the best explanation. More information may come later. I do think it’s possible jailers didn’t act in his best interest. There was a situation here several years ago where a known sexual predator was given a “cellie” at the jail who was awaiting transport to prison for a life without parole sentence. The predator was murdered in jail. It’s my opinion that the cell assignment was likely deliberate.

aj0201

I’m sorry, I took a quick look. The guy was awaiting sentencing after being convicted of first degree murder when he did the killing in the cell. But I still think the assignment may have been deliberate.

aj0201

Wake, you’re saying a known sexual predator was attacked while in jail? My goodness, that never happens! Most times, sexual predators are treated quite nicely by their jail mates.

James Bond1

Hummmmmmm………………………..I didn't even take a quick look. I haven't been anywhere near such activities and for that matter facilities...………..Probably got to see them when I was a Boy Scout, but I don't even remember that. Bad places to be and even visit

JohnQTaxpayer

Vaj is asking folks to ignore Epstein's own statement that he DIDN'T attempt suicide, but rather was attacked. No evidence of guilt or suicidal ideations. But believe Vaj instead the actual victim, because Vaj is SO insightful due to his role as a teen conselor... [lol][huh][whistling]

JohnQTaxpayer

Since you BS, Vaj, it's pretty simple to me. CUI BONO? Literally meaning "who benefits?," cui bono? is a rhetorical Latin legal phrase used to imply that whoever appears to have the most to gain from a crime is probably the culprit. More generally, it's used in English to question the meaningfulness or advantages of carrying something out.

munchman

Mark Fuhrman said on fox and friends that the idea of suicide watch where they check every half hour is a joke and a half hour is plenty of time to off one's self. If a person is determined to kill themselves, he says that stopping them is nearly impossible.

JohnQTaxpayer

You mean Mark Furhman the RACIST Democrat who had to resign the police force in disgrace, munchman..?[huh]

aj0201

Wake, you don’t think it’s possible that an attack made him suicidal? A glimpse into the future?? And Mark Fuhrman isn’t a democrat. Don’t just make stuff up.

JohnQTaxpayer

I think you saying "... don’t think it’s possible that an attack made him suicidal?" Is YOU 'making things up' (as per usual).[whistling][tongue_smile]

beelog

Either way, I don't think there will be too many tears shed.

zzsnot303

seems to me, at least what is known so far, that understaffing was the main problem, and Sir Jeffrey took advantage of that

jdw64485

The way it looks only Jeffrey knows what really happened and he's not going to say.

zzsnot303

as with most things, expect the unexpected... pedophiles aren't exactly favorite people in prisons..
