Players on Missouri Western’s soccer and volleyball teams might want to start checking Trip Advisor this week.

The popular travel review site might give them a leg up on the beginning of their seasons. Each team starts the 2016 campaign with multiple road swings against non-conference opponents and will have to wait to experience the partisan crowds at campus venues.

The soccer Griffons, coming off another record-breaking season, face Great American Conference-favorite Harding in their season debut. The Searcy, Arksansas, opponent isn’t one that is strange to Western and the Griffons have had good success against the Bisons in the past.

But it is just the first of two straight away contests before coach Chad Edwards’ team gets to put its cleats into the turf at newly renovated Spratt Memorial Stadium against another team.

If that road seems a bit rocky, imagine the one Griffons volleyball coach Marian Carbin’s team must navigate.

Western’s netters get just a sandwich like taste of home with four games at the Missouri Western Fieldhouse bracketed by four road games to start the year at the Washburn Invitational and a bunch of bus trips right after the homestand with eight straight away contests.

“Our matches Sept. 9 and 10 are our only home matches until October,” Carbin said about the Griffons matchups in its own Gold and Green Challenge. “I knew that’s why we scheduled it that way. To host so we wouldn’t be on the road the entire month of September.

“It’s going to be tough – especially starting out conference play that way.”

Both coaches are confident and working to make new pieces fit. Watch for more posts, features, KNPN Fox 26 television spots and more as the season unfolds.
