For the second weekend in a row, Maddy Bruder grabbed all-tournament honors for Northwest Missouri State.

This time, though, Bruder had company following the Gold and Green Challenge where Northwest and Missouri Western both hosted games.

Bruder, a sophomore, and senior Jackie Becker were all-tournament picks for the Bearcats, who went 4-0 with wins against No. 24-ranked Rockhurst, Oklahoma Baptist, East Central and Minnesota State.

Northwest sits at 8-0 for the third time in school history, joining the 1980 and 1984 teams.

“I mean with the amount of work we put in this summer and the amount of team chemistry and the flow we had, I don't want to say it was expected but it was placed in front of us,” said Bruder, who had 41 kills, 21 digs, six blocks and three services aces on Saturday, about the 8-0 start. “If we do all the things we have been practicing and keep the flow going for our team, it is definitely something that we could've done. Now that we have done it, it is satisfying, we got work to do. We have other games and 8-0 feels good now; celebrate the small victories but move on, we got a tournament this weekend.”

Northwest plays Arkansas Tech on Friday in Warrensburg, Missouri, before battling Southern Arkansas and Henderson State on Saturday in an MIAA vs. GAC tournament.

  • Northwest's soccer team is off to a 2-0 start at "home" despite playing the past two games in Spratt Stadium at Missouri Western. The games moved to St. Joseph due to weather issues, but the home field change didn't seem to bother the Bearcats, who won 2-1 against Minnesota-Crookston and then 5-0 against Sioux Falls. Northwest had four goals in a 5-minute stretch against Sioux Falls on Sunday.
  • The Bearcats women's golf team placed 16th in the Central Region Fall Preview in Olathe, Kansas, last week. Elise McDonough carded the best score for Northwest by scoring 166 and tying for 42nd place. Northwest leaves Sunday to play in the Concordia Women's Fall Invite Monday and Tuesday in St. Paul, Minnesota.
  • Mark Rosewell's tennis teams will head to Texas to compete in the Midwestern State Tournament this Friday and Saturday in Wichita Falls, Texas.
  • The Northwest men's and women's cross country team runs in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln on Saturday. Junior Brandon Phipps is set to make his season debut after missing the Bearcat Open.
