He was born on Oct. 23, 1946, in St. Joseph, to William Verl and Virginia Ruth (Green) McCoy.
He was a member of the United States Army and served during the Vietnam war in Germany. He was part of the 11th Airborne troops and a parachute instructor. After graduating from Missouri Western State University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Rodney became a police officer for the St. Joseph police department. He also worked as a deputy sheriff for the Atchison County police department.
Rodney enjoyed traveling, visiting the casino, fishing and attending car shows with his brother, Bill. He was also a board member of the Village East Tower Apartments for seniors.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his daughters, Virginia "Ginny" McCoy and Erin McCoy; siblings, Edward McCoy, Connie McCoy and Bill McCoy; nephews, Richard Myers and Randy Myers (Sarah); and niece, Cheryl Wolfe (Al).
Inurnment to be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, the Parkinson's Foundation or the Disabled Veterans of America.
