Road Conditions on Stadium in Columbia

A manhole sticks up from the milled road surface on Stadium Boulevard on Friday, June 11, 2021.

Workers will start to lay down a new surface on another section of Stadium Boulevard as early as the end of this month, the Missouri Department of Transportation said Friday.

The work is part of an ongoing project to improve the driving surface on the heavily traveled route in Columbia. A MoDOT contractor has been milling pavement between Highway 63 and Providence Road. Crews are doing the same work between Broadway and Providence Road.

MODOT says installation of a new driving surface could begin as early as the week of June 28.

As the work continues, it's been causing issues for many drivers in Columbia.

Gunnar Kelley works in Columbia and says he has been frustrated with the condition of some roads.

MoDOT has been warning drivers that the road will be rough during the project, but Kelly said the road is so rough at some intersections he feels the need to slow down dramatically. Kelly drives a truck and trailer and says he's also concerned about losing gear from his trailer, or gear being damaged.

Kelley said he'd like to see more signs telling drivers where roads are affected to give him more of an opportunity to avoid the road or adjust to the conditions.

MoDOT says the final phase of the project will include milling and adding a new driving surface to Stadium between Interstate 70 and Broadway. That phase scheduled to begin later this summer.

Work will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. and nighttime or overnight delays are possible.
