St. Joseph police are searching for a man suspected of shooting a woman Tuesday night at 11th and Seneca streets.
The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to Mosaic Life Care, according to information from St. Joseph Police Department. Her exact condition was not known as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, Capt. Dan Sweiger said.
The suspect fled in a vehicle and remained at large as of 10 p.m.
"A suspect was seen leaving in a white four-door car," Sweiger said. "Our information is that our suspect knew the victim. We don't believe it to be a random event."
Authorities were called to the scene at about 8 p.m, with heavy police presence remaining until around 10 p.m.
Police planned to contact the woman's family before releasing further information about her identity.
One witness said he didn't realize what happened at first after hearing the victim scream.
"We heard someone scream on the ground," he said. "We thought someone had been hit by a car."
The witness was concerned about the incident occurring so close to home.
"We don't expect this kind of stuff to happen on this side of town," he said. "We have kids all up and down this street."
More updates were expected to be made on Wednesday according to Sweiger.
