A Nebraska-based company is ready to unveil its newest location in St. Joseph.

The Fort announced plans in September 2015 to locate to the former Firefighters Hall at 4314 S. 40th St. The store will be open Friday, Feb. 17.

Staff were busy stocking inventory on Monday. The nearly 28,000-square-foot store will have a large selection of western wear, including men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, boots, jeans, accessories, saddles and tack and home décor.

This is the first Missouri store for Fort Western Stores. The company has five locations in Lincoln, Nebraska City and Columbus, Nebraska.

The chain was started by Carl and Shirley Wohlfarth in 1972. Their first store opened that year as a one-room tack shop in Lincoln, Nebraska, and it now encompasses more than 40,000 square feet of retail space.

In 2014, the local firefighters decided to sell their old union hall in order to concentrate on a community engagement such as volunteer programs. The building on South 40th Street was once a lively bingo hall in St. Joseph.
