While the Drag Queen Story Hour at the Downtown St. Joseph Public Library started up Tuesday evening, protesters and counter-protesters lined up along Felix Street.
Due to the large turnout, the St. Joseph Police Department stepped in to make sure the demonstrations stayed safe and orderly.
St. Joseph Police officer Tyson Seiter was among the officers helping the protests stay peaceful.
“We want to make sure everyone is calm, cool and collected while speaking their points of view,” Seiter said.
The library designated separate areas for the protesters to stand. Police helped designate those and keep people out of the streets. Toward the end of the event, police blocked off Felix Street between Ninth and 10th streets due to the heavy flow of traffic.
“Everyone is happy and grateful that we’re here to help out,” Seiter said.
