Pickleball is one of the activities offered at the REC Center.

While the weather may still be hot and humid, fall will be here soon, and with it comes several activities offered by the St. Joseph Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities Department.

The department already is beginning signups for several fall leagues, including youth volleyball, the little ballers basketball league, adult volleyball, adult softball and adult cornhole. Parks Director Chuck Kempf said the department is aiming to provide healthy activities throughout every season.

“You want to provide opportunities for people to just do healthy activities, to keep active, to keep busy, to socialize with other people,” Kempf said. “It really does enhance people’s quality of life. There’s a lot of research out there that talks about your activity level benefiting your mental health and your physical health, being outside benefiting your mental and physical health.”

Along with the various leagues, the department also is bringing back St. Joe FIT, a cooperative program between the St. Joseph Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities Department, the City of St. Joseph Health Department and the YMCA. St. Joe FIT offers group walking options along local trails and a taste of classes offered at both the REC Center and YMCA.

“We offer fitness classes both at the REC Center and at the Y, then we also meet every week for walking on Thursday evenings,” Kempf said. “We really like partnering with other community organizations. That’s really what we should be about.”

Kempf said the REC Center also is offering pickleball at the gym for citizens to take part in. The REC Center hosts a open gym from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.(tncms-inline)70e35902-55cc-4850-bddd-d165b0cdbf57[0](/tncms-inline)
