New details were revealed in a murder case during a preliminary hearing Friday morning.

In October, Brandon Cox was charged with the murder of Clifford York after he allegedly shot York through a window and left the man in a yard located at 921 N. 13th St. Cox is charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

On Friday morning, Cox, appeared before Judge Rebecca Spencer alongside his lawyer, Janeal Mattheson, to determine whether or not there was enough evidence to continue with a trial.

During the proceeding, a detective with the St. Joseph Police Department testified he had talked to a witness who had seen Cox standing over the victim’s body and was attempting to do CPR. The witness told the detective he’d left the yard with Cox, who allegedly had blood covering his hands and mouth.

The detective also said he talked to an eyewitness to the shooting, a woman who told detectives she had seen Cox shoot York with a pistol through his bedroom window. “He told her she was a witness and he’d have to kill her now,” according to the detective.

Spencer found there was enough evidence to take the case to trial and passed the case to Judge Patrick Robb, who will be reviewing it Monday, July 15.

Cox is currently being held in the Buchanan County Jail.
