A power surge took out power strips and computers at the Washington Park Library Tuesday morning.

A Tuesday morning power outage on St. Joseph’s North Side hit the Washington Park Library especially hard as the power service apparently surged when it was restored.

Washington Park Library Manager Karen Schultz said the surge took out power strips, computers, two of three air conditioning units, the elevator, the library’s alarm system and a library card reader.

For now, fans are helping keep the library cool until the air units can be fixed. She said the elevator repairman is waiting on parts.

There is no estimate yet on the total amount of damage caused by the surge that was caused by a tree falling on a power line. Over 1,000 KCP&L customers were affected by the outage.
