10-7 postcard

This is a rare black-and-white postcard from 1908 shows a view from the city’s military tournament. This dirigible balloon was one of the highlights of the show, which saw 5,000 troops performing in St. Joseph. The dirigible is called the Signal Corps Dirigible No. 1. Its creator, Thomas Scott Baldwin, was a pioneer balloonist and had been working with and designing dirigibles since the beginning of the 20th century. The Army paid $10,000 for the hydrogen-filled, motorized balloon.
