One man is in custody after a police pursuit near the Andrew County line.

The Andrew County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Country Club Village police arrived at the area of Highway 59 and County Line Road before noon on Tuesday. According to Andrew County Sheriff Bryan Atkins, police were following a man wanted for allegedly stealing a red Ford pickup.

Atkins said the truck reached speeds of 65 mph during the pursuit, which snaked into Buchanan County and then back toward Country Club Village. The chase ended just across the county line when Atkins said the truck crashed into an embankment.

A crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the driver of the truck as 22-year-old Jonathan Smith. The report indicates Smith was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Atkins.

Tim Archer, a witness to the crash, said he saw a pickup that appeared to go through a ditch and end up near a parking lot of a former gas station. He said officers were next to a man who was eventually taken away in an ambulance.

“They had him sitting upright until the ambulance took him away,” Archer told News-Press NOW.

The truck was reported stolen from the Fillmore, Missouri, area around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, and the first contact by law enforcement was made with the vehicle just before 11:30 a.m., Atkins said.

Atkins said Smith will be held for 24 hours and could face formal charges.
