A man suffered minor injuries after stopping the attempted theft of his vehicle.
At 11:20 p.m. on Monday, St. Joseph police responded to 1040 S. Belt Highway on a report of attempted vehicle theft. Employees at Jimmy John’s were getting off work, and one was standing outside a truck while it was running. Another person walking down the street jumped in the vehicle, was able to get it in gear and started to take off.
The owner of the vehicle was able to jump in the vehicle’s driver’s side with the suspect. The vehicle then went south across Seneca Street and into the parking lot of a Dunkin’ Donuts that is under construction.
The vehicle struck a utility pole, snapping it in half. The vehicle continued into the Dunkin’ Donuts, striking a newly constructed concrete wall.
The suspect was taken to Mosaic Life Care to be cleared medically, then was taken into custody. The owner of the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
