ATCHISON COUNTY, Mo. — A 30-year-old central Missouri man drowned Friday morning while attempting to retrieve a boat floating adrift on the Missouri River in far northern Atchison County, Missouri.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol report identified the victim as Benjamin P. Hirner, of Mokane, Missouri.

The patrol said the incident occurred at 6:15 a.m. on the Missouri River, a half mile north of the Nishnabotna River.

Hirner was trying to recover a boat that gone adrift on the river when he drowned, the report said. Authorities were able to recover Hirner, who was taken by a Nebraska Air National Guard helicopter to Nebraska Medicine-Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he was pronounced dead Friday afternoon.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources also assisted at the scene.
