Rick Frizell sits with his daughter, Raven Kirk. Rick is in a coma in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, after drowning. His family is trying to raise money for his health costs, which aren’t covered fully by his insurance company in international emergencies.

St. Joseph resident Rick Frizell was vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when things went bad last Saturday.

Mr. Frizell was knocked over by an ocean wave and couldn’t get back up. He essentially drowned and is now in a coma in a Puerto Vallarta hospital.

With the help of Missouri Rep. Sam Graves, Rick’s son, Joel, and daughter, Raven, were able to get emergency passports to fly down to be with their father while he’s in critical care.

The medical bills covered under Mr. Frizell’s insurance already have been exhausted and it doesn’t cover international emergencies.

Mr. Frizell’s other daughter, Robin, and son-in-law Jared Kirk are trying to do something about it from home.

“What we’re asking for is just help for covering his medical expenses and then the costs to eventually bring him home ... if he’s able to be medevaced back to the United States,” Mr. Kirk said. “It’s going to be significant, probably upward of $20,000 to $25,000 just for the flight and then the medical expenses on top of what his small policy is going to cover.”

Robin Perkins added: “It’s very hard. I opted to stay behind to kind of run point and do some of the stuff we needed to do here, to help Jared with the kids. It’s hard not getting to see him and be there, especially since we don’t know what the outcome is going to be at this point.”

Although Mr. Frizell is in a coma, the family was waiting to hear from the doctor Thursday night on news of his condition moving forward.
