St. Joseph firefighters battled throughout the night to keep a house fire from spreading to other homes in a neighborhood south of Messanie Street.
Firefighters got the call Thursday shortly before 4 a.m. and found a house fully engulfed in flames on the 800 block of Warsaw Avenue. The house collapsed into a pile of charred ruins and is considered a total loss.
“There was heavy involvement,” said Paris Jenkins, a battalion chief. “It was hot enough to melt the siding on the house across the street.”
Jenkins said 18 firefighters responded and were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby houses.
Crews cleared the scene at around 6:30 a.m.
There were no injuries, and firefighters were unsure if anyone lived in the house. Jenkins said there were reports that a woman was moving things out of the structure with a flashlight. The house had water access but no other utilities connected.
A fire inspector said the cause was undetermined at this time.
