Construction on Joe Town Speedway's go-kart course at 5328 N. Belt Highway is expected to finish at the end of August.

St. Joseph residents will be able to race go-karts without having to drive out of town beginning later this summer.

Joe Town Mini Golf announced the construction of Joe Town Speedway in May. Work on the project started a little later than originally planned, according to Rick Gilmore, who owns both businesses along with his wife, Marcia, daughter Katie Lane and Lane’s husband, Joe.

“We got a slow start,” Gilmore said. “It took a while to get all of our permitting and all that. And then when we started, the weather didn’t cooperate. But we’re back on track now. I’d hoped to open it earlier this summer, but it looks like toward the end of August we’ll have it completed.”

Currently, the construction company is getting ready to pour concrete for the course once all forms are set up. An entertainment company is then coming in to build the track.

“Amusement Products from Chattanooga, Tennessee, is putting in our charging systems and all the controls and furnishing the cars,” Gilmore said. “They are very experienced in this field. They built several parks in Branson, Missouri.

They built the speedways there. And they built one in Columbia.”

Gilmore and his family decided on building a go-kart track after a Facebook poll gave people the option to vote for a second mini golf course or go-karts. The response was clear.

“The go-karts won 9 to 1,” Gilmore said. “Mike, who is the superintendent for Amusement Products, said everywhere he goes, people ask him what he’s doing and he tells them he’s building this. And everybody’s excited for us to get open.”

Once Joe Town Speedway is open, the season for the go-kart race course will run until around Thanksgiving.
