A vacant Apple Market building didn’t stay empty for long.
Compton’s Furniture Store is moving in to one of the the old grocery store’s former locations at 3734 Pear St. Staff have been busy preparing the space with clothing, furniture, bulk laundry detergent and other household goods. The locally owned company plans to open the new store next week on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
This is the fourth store for Compton’s, which has locations in Macon, Smithville and Richmond, Missouri. The Macon location is the original store, which opened about six years ago.
The store’s manager, Brandon Stanbrough, said some people are curious what a liquidation, close-out store is.
“Really, big-box stores, we get a lot of their extra stuff. Close outs, discontinued stuff,” he said. “And we do actually keep a supply of mattresses that we order and keep in stock.”
Compton’s offers delivery, layaway and recently changed to a new finance company that has a 12 months, same-as-cash option.
The store will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Stanbrough said the Christian company likes to be closed on Sundays so staff can attend church, spend time with their families or do what they need to on their day off.
Stanbrough said he plans to have about 12 full-time employees.
“Since it’s a small company, you spend just as much time here as with your real family sometimes,” he said.
Apple Market closed the Pear Street location on Nov. 19.
The new furniture is good news for Jerome Wheeler. Wheeler owns Wheeler Pharmacy located inside the building. The pharmacist remained opened after Apple Market closed and Wheeler said he is looking forward to a new neighbor.
