St. Joseph police remained on the scene Tuesday morning of American Walnut Co., 2801 S. Second St.., after reports that a man died in a possible industrial accident.

Federal authorities have opened an investigation into a workplace fatality at one St. Joseph company.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said a worker, confirmed as Joshua S. Hill, 38, died in an accident at American Walnut Co., 2801 S. Second St. The accident occurred in the company’s sawmill, said Rhonda Burke, with OSHA’s district office in Chicago.

Preliminary information indicates that the employee came into contact with operating equipment used at the facility. The company reported the accident, as required.

“That’s the preliminary information we have,” Burke said.

St. Joseph police were called to investigate a fatal accident at the South Side business. Officers remained on the scene for much of Tuesday morning.

Burke said investigators believe the accident took place Monday afternoon. She said a company is required to report workplace deaths to OSHA within eight hours of the incident.

American Walnut makes and sells a variety of lumber and specialty products, including gunstocks and hardwood slabs used in furniture. The business is located on Stockyards Expressway.

OSHA has six months to complete the investigation.

Hill was born in Trenton, Missouri and graduated from Grundy R-V High School in Galt, in 1998.
