The city of St. Joseph is continuing to assess flood damage and has been reporting spending to the State Emergency Management Agency.

This week, the city reported that around $966,000 will be spent on damage and preparations to SEMA, who will take that information to Gov. Mike Parson. Parson will gather information and is then expected to ask for federal aid from FEMA.

“As of right now, the governor of the state of Missouri has not formally asked for a disaster declaration, but that is expected sometime soon, as soon as they finish gathering information,” Woody said.

The majority of damage to city property in St. Joseph occurred at Heritage Park, where outfield fences and a concession building were affected by the water. The city also expects damage to underground electric utilities going to the field lights and is hopeful that the turf will be healthy.

In all, an estimated $600,000 worth of damage occurred at Heritage Park.

An additional $100,000 to $200,000 in damage could be counted at City Yards, where a basement flooded, leading to a boiler being destroyed. Floodwaters also washed away road salt supplies and ruined gasoline in a tank at the site on South Third Street.

This could raise the total local cost of the flood to more than a million dollars.

“It could be in the $1.1 million to $1.2 million range, we’re guessing altogether, there’s some damage we’re still assessing with some outside help down at the City Yards,” Woody said.

Other expenses included sandbagging, pumping operations, closing roadways and overtime for city workers and emergency crews, who coordinated traffic and evacuated a portion of the city.

If FEMA does pay out funds, it will be in the form of a reimbursement and the state and city likely will be responsible for a portion of the cost.

Woody said there is no timeline for that process as of yet.
