A 46-year-old man suffered serious injuries Monday night when he was hit by a car while attempting to cross Riverside Road.

The accident occurred at 7:08 p.m. as the man, who was not identified but is from Atchison, Kansas, was crossing the street near the McDonald’s’/Speedy’s Convenience store at 1310 S. Riverside Road.

Sgt. Chris McBane with the St. Joseph Police Department said a Volkswagen Passat struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The driver of the car, a 20-year-old St. Joseph man, did not suffer serious injuries.

McBane said the pedestrian was transported to Mosaic Life Care in an ambulance. The pedestrian appeared to be trying to get from the restaurant/gas station to the businesses on the east side of Riverside Road, McBane said.

The man was not crossing at the corner. McBane said there were no arrests or citations, but the accident remains under investigation.

Police kept a portion of the roadway closed until about 10:30 p.m.
