A five-car pileup backed up traffic during rush hour on a rainy Friday evening at South Belt Highway and Powers Drive.
Officer Robert Paul, with the St. Joseph Police Department, said the 11 people involved only had minor injuries.
"The crash occurred from a line of vehicles waiting for the stop light on Belt and 36 highway," Paul said. "The vehicle causing it slid into the line of cars causing a chain reaction."
Paul said a white Ford F-350 struck a red Kia Sorrento, which slid into a yellow Mercury Cougar forcing it to slam into the back of a PT Cruiser which hit a Mazda.
"The first vehicle that was struck has the most damage and that was in the rear-end," Paul said.
He also said the driver of the Kia Sorrento complained of leg pain and was transported to the hospital by a private car. The first three vehicles involved in the crash were towed from the scene which took over 30 minutes to clear.
