Shaw Flooring Gallery, 2028 Frederick Ave., closed recently. Detectives with the St. Joseph Police Department are actively investigating the business’s owners, Lyle and Emily Hendee, after customers filed reports claiming they paid for products and services that weren’t delivered.

A new business is moving into the former Hatfield’s Antique Mall store.

Lyle and Emily Hendee are opening Shaw Flooring Gallery next week. The retail front will have an approximately 5,000 square feet of showroom featuring Shaw products from wood and carpet to tile and linoleum. Another 5,000 square feet will be used for inventory.

The building sat vacant since the business closed at 2028 Frederick Ave. in 2012. The store operated for 20 years, but a Hatfield has occupied the space in one form or another for 90 years.

The Hendees are leasing the space, for now. The couple also own a Shawn Flooring Gallery in their hometown of Trenton, Missouri.

Lyle Hendee has been in the flooring business for most of his life. That work flowed into the furniture business. He has been a part of furniture and flooring stores for decades, but he and his wife started their own business a year ago in Trenton. They wanted to open a new location in St. Joseph.

“It’s the biggest town we’ve ever been in,” Hendee said. “I think it will do well.”

While most flooring stores sell a variety of brands, for Hendee, he said going with only Shaw made sense.

“For me, it’s simple,” he said. “It’s one phone call to see if we have something (in stock).”

The store will offer installation, free delivery and estimates and is open to contractors, too.

Once open, Shaw Flooring Gallery will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
