If you’re planning a kitchen remodel this year, now is the time to begin making some decisions.
A remodel project, depending on the depth, can take six weeks to a few months to complete, so if you’re planning on summer entertaining, don’t wait to get started, experts say.
“This is the time of year people start getting their homes ready for the summer and having people over,” says Ben Crane, interior project specialist with Lowe’s Home Improvement. “We’ll get an idea of what they’re wanting to go with. Are they wanting to go with something bold or something warm and inviting?”
He says some homeowners come in and want something low key and not to drastic, like shades of gray or beige. It just depends on the individual.
“Right now some popular colors are warm and soft whites,” Crane says. “Sometimes the actual white cabinets are a bit overpowering for some people, so they’ll go with a coconut or cream, which are really in right now.”
Home decor experts recommend khaki, butter, eggplant and sage as a few of the most popular shades of color for the kitchen. But there are many color options to choose from.
Experts suggest that since kitchens are busy workplaces, they can benefit from peaceful hues. When opting for kitchens finished in shades of creamy gold and medium brown, boost the temperature by accessorizing with copper pots, wooden accents, and woven baskets.
Warm kitchens and breakfast nooks rely on a fine-tuned mix of colors in a range of shades and intensities. A dusty sage green cabinet pairs well with a neutral surface in light and dark finishes, allowing bright shades of eggplant to be the center of attention.
Magnify a neutral’s impact by presenting the color in wood-clad ceilings, cove moldings, distressed floorboards and turned furniture legs, which all contribute to the overall look while preventing the room from appearing too busy.
Light green cabinets can soften your kitchen’s edges. The pastel paint color will brighten the area while adding style that is equal parts modern and vintage.
Built-in custom cabinets can get a sleek neutral finish from a coat of gray color. The blend of traditional cabinetry with modern warm gray paint creates a clean, casual and comfortable kitchen atmosphere.
Ocean-blue cabinets bring coastal comfort into a kitchen. Contrasted with white shiplap siding and concrete counters, the beachy blue hue will take center stage without being overwhelming.
Lighting plays an important role in your kitchen remodel as well. Experts say the right lighting can bring out your color scheme. With an open floor plan, kitchen lighting is important to adjacent areas of the home.
Crane says some people will go as far as updating the flooring and backsplash so it all comes together instead of clashing.
“Typically what we do is find a cabinet sample that’s close to what they have and compare the colors,” Crane says. “This way we can see if they’re going to blend well together.”
