Pronto Cafe is located at 2513 Frederick Ave. in the original Geiger Mansion.

From a mansion to a coffee shop and eatery, the Pronto Cafe needs little introduction for anyone who has driven down Frederick Avenue.

The Geiger Mansion, which was originally built in 1911 and 1912, serves as a sort of historical beacon in the area, and one that the cafe fully embraced during its construction in 2015 after being purchased by businessman Steven Craig four years prior. The covered patio and welcoming vibe are hard to ignore, said Karla Vey, the general manager of Pronto Cafe.

“It has beautiful windows and the décor is amazing,” she said. “(Craig) has very good taste. We also set ourselves apart by having hand-crafted sandwiches, fresh-made salads and our coffee is local Mokaska, so we pride ourselves on that.”

Pronto cafe sells various breakfast items and baked goods, like muffins, brownies and hand-rolled cinnamon rolls. Nine different sandwiches are featured on the menu, including a BLT, grilled cheese and a tomato mozzarella sandwich, to name a few. That’s not to mention the salads and wraps, smoothies and a huge selection of coffee, espresso and tea available at the cafe as well.

And while locals wait for their order, Vey said many tend to marvel at Pronto’s walls, filled to the brim with pictures of St. Joseph icons like Walter Cronkite and Coleman Hawkins.

Pronto allows interested parties to rent out the space for receptions or showers and will even cater events with various platters and fresh-baked goods.

On Friday evenings, Pronto has a seasonal happy hour out on the patio, where beer and wine are served from 5 to 8 p.m.

“It’s just a super friendly staff. We have some great people, and we’re very picky about who we hire. … But we have very little turnover, so that’s a good sign,” Vey said, smiling.

The restaurant also has seen some expansion with a kiosk in the East Hills Shopping Center, which Vey said is slowly expanding its menu to become sort of a mini version of the location on Frederick Avenue.

Pronto Cafe, 2513 Frederick Ave., is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
