People who visit this quiet river town tend to keep coming back for more. Just under four hours from St. Joseph, Hermann, Missouri, provides an opportunity for a quick escape from the daily norm.

“We go about every year,” says Sheryl Snook of Kansas City. “It’s a short drive, relatively, to get away.”

The scenic German town is pretty and relaxing, Snook says. It’s not fast-paced. In addition, sometimes cell phones don’t work, so you get to disconnect. It’s a little bit of a step back in time, she says.

Because of the beautiful scenery and relaxed atmosphere, Hermann is a popular place for weddings. Bed and breakfasts keep busy with guests attending those weddings and other events like the multiple festivals the town hosts, including Maifest and Oktoberfest.

Even when there isn’t a festival scheduled, there is no shortage of entertainment in Hermann. Whether you like visiting museums or going on tours through historic districts or wine trails, seeing a play or hearing live music, hitting every winery in town or just stopping in shops along the way, you are sure to find something you love , even if it’s just the amazing food.

If you would like to visit Hermann but don’t want to make the four-hour drive, for about what you would pay in gas round trip you can take a much more relaxing voyage on a train. The Amtrak Missouri River Runner Line runs between Kansas City and St. Louis and has four stops daily in Hermann.

“I’ve taken the train to Hermann about half a dozen times,” says Katy Schwartz Drowns of Savannah. “The train is so much better than driving. It’s very relaxed. You can get up and move around. There’s a bathroom right there. You can bring snacks if you want. It’s awesome. Then, when you get to Hermann, the trolley is right there to pick you up. You never need to drive anywhere.”
