The circulatory system is very simple to understand. We only have 2 types of blood vessels in our body. Arteries and veins. Our circulatory system is a closed loop.
Arteries are the supply side and veins are the return side. When your heart beats, it sends blood out to your body through arteries. Once our tissues are done utilizing the oxygen and nutrients, then the veins job is to collect this “spent” blood and transport it back to the heart where the entire process is repeated.
Since human beings are upright, the arteries (the supply side), have gravity working with them. The veins (the return side) must transport blood up hill against gravity. To accomplish this up hill journey the veins have several one-way check valves built inside of them. When those one-way check valves become “leaky” the entire venous system of your leg backs up and blood pools progressively in your legs.
This results in symptoms of heaviness, aching, cramping, restless legs, itching, or leg pain. Additionally, patients may have nonhealing ulcers on their legs and, occasionally, the enlarged veins will spontaneously bleed. Also, 80 percent of patients will have varicose veins popping out all over their legs but, 20 percent of patients with “leaky” valves can be very symptomatic but have normal looking legs.
