Republican Kate Schaefer will be replacing Judge Melissa Lawyer in the Division 1 courtroom of the 5th Judicial Circuit.

Schaefer defeated opponent A. David Peppard with 64.2 percent of the vote in Buchanan County and 73.5 percent in Andrew County. In total Schaefer had 24,503 votes.

Schaefer said she enjoyed the campaign and felt that her opponent ran a good race.

“I’m feeling overwhelmed, I’m feeling proud, I’m feeling honored,” Schaefer said. “It’s just amazing the support I got from Andrew and Buchanan county people, hopefully knowing what I’ve done and what I want to do for our communities. It’s just overwhelming.”

She said she believes her experience with criminal and civil cases will make it possible for a wider variety of case types to be tried in Division 1.

“I’m not saying that things are going to change, but I like that I’m there and have the experience and the ability to do more than just what local court rules require of that division right now,” Schaefer said.

Schaefer will be sworn in in December and will take the bench in January.
